US customary vs Imperial units: what is different?
US customary units and British Imperial units are related systems, but they are not the same system. Modern inches, feet, yards, miles, and avoirdupois pounds have the same size in both. Gallons, quarts, pints, and fluid ounces do not. The British long ton also differs from the American short ton.
This distinction matters when a recipe says “one pint,” a vehicle reports miles per gallon, or a product specification gives tons without naming the system. Converting the number while assuming the wrong gallon or ton can create a large error. Write US or Imperial beside the unit before doing the arithmetic.
Why the names overlap
The American colonies inherited several English units. The United States kept versions of those measures after independence, while Britain reorganized its system through nineteenth-century legislation. Both systems retained familiar names, but the definitions for capacity diverged. Later international agreements aligned core length and mass units such as the yard and avoirdupois pound.
NIST recommends the name US customary system of measurement for the non-SI units used in the United States. Its US metrication FAQ specifically warns that the US system should not be called Imperial or British and points readers to official tables for the significant differences.

A six-foot measurement means the same length in a current US or UK context. So does a ten-pound mass when both speakers mean the ordinary avoirdupois pound. You can use the centimeters and inches, meters and feet, or kilograms and pounds converter without selecting US or Imperial for these units.
Liquid volume is the main trap
The US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. The Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters, about 20 percent larger. Each system divides its gallon differently: a US gallon contains 128 US fluid ounces, while an Imperial gallon contains 160 Imperial fluid ounces. As a result, the smaller Imperial fluid ounce sits inside the larger Imperial gallon.

Use the liters and gallons converter with the correct gallon definition. A result for US gallons is not a result for Imperial gallons. NIST's conversion-factor appendix lists the systems separately and is a useful authority when a specification needs traceable factors.
A US cup is not a British cup
Modern American recipes commonly treat one US cup as 240 mL for nutrition and practical kitchen use, though the traditional US customary cup is about 236.6 mL. Current British recipes are more likely to state milliliters or grams. Older sources may use an Imperial cup of about 284.1 mL, which equals half an Imperial pint.
The word “tablespoon” can also conceal a regional difference. A US tablespoon is about 14.79 mL and is commonly rounded to 15 mL for recipes. Many metric recipe standards use 15 mL. An Australian tablespoon is 20 mL. The country and publication date of a recipe matter more than the language alone.
For liquids, identify the source convention and then use the milliliters and cups converter. For dry ingredients, volume-to-mass conversion also depends on the ingredient's density and measuring method. The US and metric recipe guide explains why one universal cups-to-grams factor cannot work.
US dry capacity is another system inside the system
The United States has separate dry-capacity units for commodities such as produce and grain. A US dry pint is about 550.61 mL, larger than the US liquid pint of about 473.18 mL. Eight US dry gallons make a US bushel of about 35.24 liters. These units are not interchangeable with US liquid measures or Imperial measures simply because the names pint, quart, peck, and bushel appear in more than one system.
When a historical document or agricultural specification uses one of these units, find the unit family before converting. “Three pints” is incomplete if the difference between liquid, dry, and Imperial volume affects the task.
Short ton, long ton, and metric tonne
The ordinary pound is aligned, but the larger ton units are not:

A figure of 50 tons could mean 45,359 kg, 50,802 kg, or 50,000 kg depending on the definition. Ask for the system instead of selecting the familiar factor. Spell tonne when you mean the 1,000 kg metric unit.
Avoirdupois and troy ounces measure different masses
The everyday ounce used for groceries and body mass is the avoirdupois ounce, exactly 1/16 of an avoirdupois pound and about 28.3495 g. The troy ounce used for precious metals is about 31.1035 g. A troy ounce is not a fluid ounce and is not 1/16 of the ordinary pound.
The UK's current weights and measures guidance says metric units are required for most sales in Great Britain, with limited exceptions that include draught beer and cider by the pint and precious metals by the troy ounce. The legal position is more specific than the casual claim that Britain “uses Imperial.”
Fuel economy can reverse the comparison
Miles per gallon looks comparable because the mile is the same, but the gallon is not. A vehicle traveling the same distance on the same amount of fuel receives a larger mpg number when the calculation uses the larger Imperial gallon. For example, 30 miles per US gallon is about 36 miles per Imperial gallon. Nothing about the vehicle changed.
For an international comparison, liters per 100 kilometers avoids the gallon ambiguity, but it reverses the direction of “better”: a lower L/100 km value means less fuel used. Always label mpg as US or Imperial before converting or comparing specifications.
A quick identification checklist
- Find the country and date. A current US manual, a current UK label, and a nineteenth-century British recipe may follow different conventions.
- Identify the quantity. Length and ordinary pounds align; capacity and tonnage need extra attention.
- Look for a qualifier. US liquid, US dry, Imperial, avoirdupois, troy, short, long, and metric are meaningful words.
- Convert through an explicit definition. Write the factor with its unit so gallons cannot silently change systems.
- Report the system with the answer. “4.55 liters per Imperial gallon” is verifiable; “4.55 liters per gallon” is incomplete.
Worked examples
Recipe: An older British recipe calls for one pint of stock. Treating it as a US pint gives 473 mL, but an Imperial pint is about 568 mL. The missing 95 mL is roughly one-fifth of the intended volume and can affect the dish.
Fuel: A UK specification lists 48 mpg Imperial. Convert the Imperial gallon to the US gallon before comparing it with an American rating. The corresponding number is about 40 mpg US.
Freight: A historical manifest states 12 tons in a British context. If it means long tons, multiply 12 by 2,240 lb rather than 2,000 lb. The load is 26,880 lb, not 24,000 lb.
